Herbal Bitters Health Benefits

by Dr. Anastasia Stocker

Herbal bitters are a combination of bitter herbs and roots that are traditionally used to stimulate digestion. Improving digestive function and power improves overall health and wellness. These herbs are extracted in alcohol or vinegar and taken in drop dosages (10-15 drops) before meals.

Bitter Herbs Include:

  • Dandelion
  • Gentian root
  • Wormwood
  • Artichoke leaf
  • Chamomile
  • Yarrow
  • Hops

How do herbal bitters work?

Bitter herbs stimulate taste receptors on the tongue that activate the vagus nerve. By activating the vagus nerve, the bitter flavor moves us out of sympathetic (fight-or-flight) into parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system response. There are also bitter receptors in other areas of the body- including the respiratory tract.

Bitter herbs stimulate the liver, gallbladder and pancreas to increase the production of saliva, bile, and stomach acid. These digestive fluids are responsible for the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and other micronutrients.

What are the potential health benefits of herbal bitters?

Improved digestion: As mentioned, herbal bitters can help to stimulate digestion and aid in the absorption of nutrients. This can lead to improved digestion and fewer digestive complaints such as bloating and constipation. Bitters can also improve acid reflux by improving the stomachs ability produce acid, the underlying cause to acid reflux and heartburn.

Liver support: Herbal bitters can also help to support liver function. The liver is responsible for detoxifying the body and producing bile, which aids in digestion. By stimulating the liver and increasing bile production, herbal bitters can help to improve liver function and detoxification.

Blood sugar regulation: Some studies have suggested that bitter herbs may help to regulate blood sugar levels by decreasing post-prandial (after eating) blood glucose levels. Bitters can also decrease food intake by modulating gut hormones. This can be beneficial for those with diabetes or other blood sugar disorders.

Immune support: Remember how there are bitter receptors in the respiratory tract (nose, sinuses, and lungs)? In nature, bitter taste is often associated with toxins – toxic plants and products produced by microorganisms, especially bacteria. When the bitter taste receptors are activated, the innate immune system (fast acting part of the immune system) becomes active to kill or neutralize the microbe or toxin. Taking digestive bitters can help prime the innate immune system to be ready to defend against upper respiratory infections.

You can also achieve the health benefits of herbal bitters by including bitter foods into your diet:

  • Arugula
  • Broccoli rabe
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Dandelion greens
  • Endive
  • Grapefruit
  • Kale
  • Radicchio
  • Radish

It’s important to note that the bitterness level of these foods can vary depending on factors such as ripeness, cooking method, and personal taste preferences. However, incorporating these bitter foods into your diet can be a great way to stimulate digestion and support overall health. Additionally, combining bitter foods with sweet, sour, or salty flavors can help to balance out the bitterness and create a more well-rounded flavor profile.

Are there any risks or side effects?

While herbal bitters are generally considered safe, there are some potential risks and side effects to be aware of. Bitter herbs can cause digestive upset in some individuals, particularly if taken in large doses. They may also interact with certain medications, so it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider before using herbal bitters if you are taking any medications. Certain bitters are also contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.

In addition, some bitter herbs, such as wormwood, can be toxic in high doses. For this reason, it’s important to use herbal bitters as directed and to only purchase them from a reputable source.

It is important to speak with your healthcare provider before using them, especially if you are taking any medications.
